Copy Editing & Proofreading, what's the difference?
Copy Editing:
This is the level of editing most commonly called for.
I will check and regulate your:
- grammar,
- spelling,
- punctuation,
- mechanics of style.
I will check all design elements for accuracy and consistency, including:
- headers,
- level heads,
- page numbering,
- word breaks,
- end-of-line breaks,
- page breaks,
- cross references,
- appropriate placement of tables and artwork.
Copy editing may include marking head levels and moving placement of art if required. It may also include providing or editing cover copy, front and back material, and spot-checking references.
I will consult with you in every instance where I feel an important change is required.

Proofreading:
Proofreading is sometimes mistaken for copy editing, but technically speaking, it's a separate process.
Proofreading is done after the page proofs have been prepared by the designer, and while copy editing errors may still be found, a proofreader is concerned with other elements unless additional copy editing is specifically requested.
For the final proof, I will do a line-by-line comparison with the original layout to ensure all errors have been corrected. This may include completion of table of contents and index, and numbering of cross references.

Please send a sample of your work (approx 20%), because every piece of written work is unique and it’s very difficult to specify a set price for all types and complexities of writing. Written work that requires extensive correction can be time consuming and therefore more costly to edit. Send your samples to: coralee@corproof.com.au or post to the address below.
